SHE Reads Octavia E. Butler's Kindred

SHE

The Shaping Her Earth Book Club highlights BIPOC women. This fall we’re exploring the provocative and prophetic legacy of science fiction author Octavia E. Butler.

Through Kindred, we embark on an engaging time-slip story, centered around a Black woman living in Los Angeles in 1976, who becomes an accidental traveler through time. Jockeyed back and forth between present and past by an unknown cosmic force, the female protagonist Dana Franklin confronts a community of slaves and their masters at a plantation in 19th-century Maryland, which forms a strange mirror on the present day.

SHE wants to know "What would you do if transported back to one of the worst times to be both black and a woman?"

I would try my hardest to escape to the north because I know I could be somewhat free.
